The College of Arts and Sciences’ Center for Career Success will hold its first ‘Arts, Creative and Design Career Fair’ on Friday.
Business casual wear and polished performance will be key features of Ohio State’s first arts- and career-oriented design.
Sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences’ Career Success Program, the “Arts, Creative and Design Career Fair” will take place from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Ohio Union Auditorium, with organizations such as EssenceCartoon, City Year, Dance. Joy Studios and the Wexner Center for the Arts are slated to attend.
This event is designed for students in creative fields – such as visual, written and performing arts, art management, motion picture production, theatre, visual communication, art history and more – according to its Handshake . register.
Although ASC Career Success has sponsored several career fairs over the years, Andrew Freeman, director of the Arts, Creative and Design Career Fair, said Friday will be the first time the program has helped coordinate a series of careers focused on art.
Freeman said: “It will be a traditional craft fair where the students will come in, and they will walk into the Great Hall. “There will be employers at the tables, and they can walk around, talk to them, and information gathering and networking.”
Freeman, assistant director of industry relations for the Center for Career and Professional Success, said the event was something he felt was “needed” at Ohio State.
“Basically we’ll have everything from then on [the] art encompasses many things: visual, written, performing, musical, etc.,” said Freeman.
Freeman says it’s important for students to come to the event prepared, especially with their full curriculum vitae in hand.
Scott Keyes, senior events coordinator in the College of Arts and Sciences, agreed with Freeman. He said students should plan to arrive early and chat with as many people as possible.
“Come with a smile on your face and be prepared to talk to a lot of different employers,” Keyes said. “Say something to everyone because you never know what those employers might be interested in.”
Freeman says it’s important to take advantage of employment opportunities, even if they seem intimidating at first.
“I know it can be very intimidating, walking into a big room full of strangers, but it’s something you have to do and it gets easier when you do it,” Freeman said.
Keyes said these fairs help foster valuable relationships between students and various employers, which can lead them to future careers and career paths.
“Get the cards, get the information, get the LinkedIn profile and build those relationships with those employers,” Keyes said. As time goes on, you never know – something might come up, and because you kept talking to that employer, they might say, ‘Hey, we got this opportunity. ‘
Freeman also said that attending the event can help students find career opportunities in jobs they may not be pursuing now.
“For example, [a student] going into music might be thinking about something else they want to do outside of performance or outside of performing,” Freeman said. Maybe they want to teach art and make art.
Freeman said most of all, he hopes students will learn more about the internet and its related benefits from the careers program.
“Practice career development skills, such as working on your resume and networking; communication as well, because it’s like small talk,” said Freeman. “These are things our department can help students with. about them. Use it as a learning opportunity because you will be doing these kinds of events for the rest of your life.”
Freeman said students can register to attend the career fair online at To shake hands or display only the event with the correct BuckID.
