In the summer of 2024, they were the words on everyone’s lips: “Will anyone match my surprise?” For the crowd gathered at MGM Music Hall Wednesday night for R&B singer-songwriter Tinashe’s Match My Freak World Tour, the answer was a resounding yes.

“Bad,” Tinashe’s first single to debut on the Billboard Hot 100, was released ahead of her Coachella performance in April as the lead single from her 2024 album “Quantum Baby.” Already a hit, the song’s simple, catchy lyrics describe the singer’s longing to find a partner who will “compare. [her] freak” in the bedroom.

Almost immediately, the Internet responded with overwhelming love for the song’s catchy chorus and addictive beat. By the end of May, the catchy song had a dedicated TikTok dance and 12 million Spotify streams, and the phrase “match my freak” was firmly established in the Internet’s discourse. At the time of writing, the song has over 100 million streams on Spotify and 5.6 million uses on TikTok – not counting fan-made mashups, such as one popular sound that combines ” Nasty” and “Space Song” by indie band “Space Song”.

Although “Nasty” was Tinashe’s first single in recent years, the singer, who goes by the name Tinashe Jorgensen Kachingwe, has been releasing solo music since 2012. During her hour-long set, she give the audience a taste of his 12-year book. , from his most popular song to date, 2014 single “2 On,” to “Quantum Baby” songs like “When I Get You Alone ” and “Thirsty.”

But first, Tinashe thanked local music for a unique DJ competition on her tour, an opportunity for an up-and-coming DJ to open the show at each stop on her tour. In Boston, that privilege went to Berklee student and Boston-based DJ P1no, who kicked off the night with a fun hour of Latin dance hits and oldies.

Massachusetts-born songwriter Raveena was up next, performing barefoot on stage during a musical performance that incorporated her R&B influences and Indian heritage. After he finished singing his last song to cheers and applause, the dreamlike papier-mâche tree that decorated the stage behind him was transformed for several camera numbers. retro-futuristic security, which is the site of “Quantum Baby”‘s cyber-Y2K good. .

Tinashe took the stage to an EDM remix of “Nasty,” flanked by four mesh-clad male dancers, before launching into 2024’s single “Getting No Sleep,” a beautiful song that celebrates the beauty of pop. More calls for “Quantum Baby” followed, and one of the dancers walked behind her every now and then to mimic the cries and cheers from the crowd.

A triple-height screen served as the backdrop to Tinashe’s set, displaying clips from her music videos or close-ups of the stage. Several times during the performance, the singer brought a camera on stage to follow the singer around or film the crowd. “Bouncin’, Pt. 2” ended with Tinashe holding the camera aloft while lying on stage, pushing up, and “Cross That Line” saw the audience screaming and waving at the camera in hopes of show yourself on the screen.

Although the majority of the night’s music came from Tinashe’s past three albums, she made sure to reward her longtime fans with some old favorites.

I can see you singing! This is for my days,” he said as the first single from 2015’s “Party Favors” began to play. Two songs from his 2014 debut album “Aquarius” followed, and turned the mic over to the audience for his first solo hits “All Hands On Deck” and “2 On.”

For her impromptu performance of the night, the screen was lit up with a clip of Cher interviewing “Mama, I’m a Rich Man”, which marked the beginning of her summer single Tinashe “No Broke Boys,” which forces fans to shout out unpopular lyrics. , “Now I have values/ Efa—k how you feel.”

In fact, the night ended as the summer began: with a powerful, provocative version of “Nasty” that everyone could sing along to.
